As part of Notre Dame's Summer Scholars program, Andrew Gillman, Temistocle Grenga, and Matt Mosby (graduate students working in the C-SWARM) presented aspects of their research related to high performance computing (HPC).
The Notre Dame Summer Scholars program is a pre-college program for high school sophomores and juniors designed to introduce prospective undergraduates to challenging academic topics while providing a taste of college life at Notre Dame. Andrew, Temistocle, and Matt presented in the "Research Computing: Computers Accelerating Discovery" track.
In their presentation, an overview of the many applications of HPC was given followed by the specific contributions of their work to mechanical modeling of composites (Matt), reactive flows simulations (Temo), and imaging/statistical characterization of heterogeneous materials (Andrew). Following the presentation, a small HPC demo of Monte Carlo integration was provided, where the students were able to visualize the integration scheme, analyze the scalability of the method, and conduct error analysis.
